Basic Operation of a Montigo gas Fireplace
This section answers basic questions about the operation of your Montigo Gas Fireplace. If an answer to your question is not listed below try searching our Frequently Asked Questions or the Maintenance Section.

1. Lighting The Pilot

2. Operating the Gas Fireplace

3. Operating the Fans or Blower

1. Lighting the pilot
First, make sure your fireplace has a standing pilot system; about 80% of units are equipped with this system, however some are equipped with electronic ignition systems. Any of our fireplaces equipped with a Millivolt (Standing Pilot) control system require you to manually light the pilot before turning on the burner.

Follow the directions in your particular model's owner's manual, or on the rating plate, located adjacent to the gas control valve. These are the best sources for proper lighting instructions, otherwise click on the links below. (Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view these links. Click here to install)

2. Operating a Gas Fireplace
A fireplace may be controlled by a wall switch (the most common method), thermostat, remote control, or in some cases, by manual control. The majority of fireplaces are equipped with a standing pilot system - this means the pilot burner and the main burner must be lit before operation.

Again, the best source for lighting to pilot and burner is reading the lighting instructions on your fireplace, which is located near the gas control valve. On most models, they can be found underneath the bottom trim or louvres. For Cast Iron stoves, the valve is located on the left side of the stove; for the Pedestal stove, the controls are located behind the bottom front panel.

Manual Control: Most Montigo gas fireplaces can be operated manually with an on/off or hi/lo gas control valve. On/off control is pretty basic fire on, or fire off. The hi/lo control allows you to modulate the flame from off, low, medium, and up to high.

Wall Switch: Montigo fireplaces may be installed with a wall switch to turn the fire on and off. Using this method, you can leave your pilot turned on and simply flip the wall switch to activate the fire.

Thermostat: Most fireplaces can be hooked up to a thermostat, which will allow you to set a desired room temperature. Your fireplace will automatically turn off and on, and heat up and cool down based on the temperature you set.

Wireless Remote Control (on/off control): This remote control will turn the fire on and off. Your pilot must be lit for this option to work.

Wireless Remote Control (with temperature and flame modulation): The flame modulation option changes the fire from off to low, medium, and high. This option allows you to set a desired room temperature, and your fireplace will turn on and off, heat up and cool down based on the temperature you set. The thermostat is inside the remote, so remember that it will take the temperature based on where the remote is located. This option is only available for Montigo gas fireplaces factory installed with a hi/lo gas valve control.

For further information on operating your fireplace, consult your owner's manual.

3. Operating the fans or blowers
Montigo gas fireplaces come equipped with either optional or integral fans and blowers, but some units are unable to be equipped with them at all. Most fans and blowers are controlled manually, by heat-activation, or controlled by an installed fan speed control.

Manual Control: An on/off wall switch usually operates the manually controlled fans.

Heat-Activated Control: These fans will automatically switch on after the fireplace's main burner has been lit and the temperature has risen. The time lapse between lighting the fireplace and fan activation will vary, depending on the model. The fans will automatically shut off as the fireplace cools. Most integral fans are heat activated but this is also available on optional fans.

Fan Speed Control: A fan speed control box is available on certain Montigo gas fireplaces; this box allows you to regulate the speed of the blower or fan.
